Let go of panic and anxiety with professional help. Most of us feel anxious from time to time, however if this is interfering with your enjoyment of everyday life it is time to do something about it.
What is Anxiety?
Anxiety takes many forms, but generally speaking it is that feeling we can get of unease, and is often accompanied by other symptoms such as over-worrying about often unnecessary things, nervousness, a rapid heartbeat and hyperventilation or over breathing.
Anxiety becomes a problem when it seems to be happening a lot and we find ourselves unable to function as we used to.
In primitive times man responded to stress and anxiety by using an inbuilt ‘fight or flight’ response that would get us out of danger, such as being attacked by a Saber-tooth tiger. However, we now live in the 21st Century ‘digital-age’ and unlikely to come across one except in a museum. However, our psyche has not evolved at the same rate as technology and other advances in today’s society, but this reflex still exists to keep us safe – even though we are not in danger! merely our brain is misinterpreting what is happening now by pattern-matching with our early childhood programming.
In our childhood we do our best to cope, but when having to cope with fearful experiences, we often cope by developing strategies aimed at keeping us safe. However, in the adult world, these strategies or avoidant behaviours no longer serve to help us and prevent us from getting on with our lives as we need to.
The symptoms of anxiety are caused by excessive amounts of stress hormones which we now know are triggered by negative thinking – worry, anger, frustration and fear etc. When going through a stressful time, these symptoms increase whereby the brain (that primitive part) interprets danger! and then starts off the ‘fight-or-flight’ process – basically gearing us up to keep us safe and able to deal with the ’emergency’. So extra oxygen is sent to the muscles (over-breathing), extra blood is also pumped to our muscles and organs (palpitations) – you get where the symptoms arise. Furthermore, as blood is directed away from our thinking/reasoning brain we become increasingly stupefied i.e unable to think or solve problems as we normally can.
As a consequence of 21st Century living, many of us are experiencing much higher levels of habitual negative stress meaning that our ‘fight or flight’ response is much more easily triggered, often daily, in slow burn and thus triggering our feelings of anxiety. However, when we meet with new stressors or threats, the flight or flight reflex worsens – sometimes suddenly – causing a panic attack. In effect our body’s self-defence system. Over time, our bad experiences generalise into General Anxiety Disorder. Anxiety and panic can also be linked to traumatic memories that have been suppressed to protect us…
Imagine a small child constantly conditioned to avoid normal situations, told No – don’t do that or threatened with punishment – or bullied at school, picked on, ignored or made fun of at school. Later, in their adult life – how are they likely to cope when demands are placed on them. When we are small children we don’t have the coping strategies to deal with highly emotional experiences so in order to protect us, the brain stores (or suppresses) them. As an adult the child may feel that they are always ‘walking on eggshells’ – afraid to express their own thoughts or ideas.
